Ocean County College Student Life is hosting a Poetry Festival on April 1 and 15.
Day one kicks off at 11 a.m. in Gateway room 104 with a poetry reading from award-winning poet Airea D. Matthews. A question-and-answer session will follow.
Matthews released her first collection of poems in 2016 with “Simulacra” and received the 2016 Yale Series of Younger Poets Award, according to her website. The New Yorker called her work “virtuosic, frantic, and darkly, very darkly, funny.” In 2024 she received The LA Times Book Prize in Poetry for her memoir-in-verse “Bread and Circus.”
Day two is the chance for OCC’s creatives to get involved with the Poetry Open Mic from 12:30-1:45 p.m. on the second floor of the Student Center. This is an opportunity for students to perform a poem, a song or a story. Refreshments will be served.
