Over 30 people showed up to participate in a shooting contest held in the OCC gym on Wednesday, March 7, from 12-2 p.m.

OCC student Shane Heck had to go through a few different events to secure his win over the other contestants. The first event was 10 shots that could be taken from anywhere on the court. Each shot was a different point value. Shots inside the paint were worth two points, outside the paint were considered three, beyond the three point line was four points, and behind the half court line was five points. In the second event, everyone had 30 seconds to make as many shots as they could, then had a little break before shooting for another 30 seconds. For the overall 60-second event the point values for each shot were all the same. At the end everyone’s score for each event was added up to make their total score

For the first event, Shane Heck scored five shots out of 10, all worth four points for a score of 20. While this was a good score, it didn’t beat out Amir Bell’s score of 27. Bell shot nine out of 10 shots worth three points each. What won it for Heck was his performance in the second event. Heck made 13 four point shots for a total 52 points. This bought his overall score for the event to 72.

“I just wanted to try it out and have some fun, I wasn’t even expecting to win,” Heck said.

Jason Tano just missed the win with a score of 68. Tano shot for 24 points on the 10-shot event and got 44 points on the 30-second event.

“I play pickup games in the gym pretty often so it felt a little different being in this contest, but overall I don’t think I did half bad,” Tano said.

Everyone attending the event received a free t-shirt and Heck received a free movie ticket as an award for winning.

“I’d love to do it again, maybe next time something a little different to mix it up,” Heck said. “It seemed like everyone enjoyed themselves. For me, I’m just happy I won a movie ticket.”
