Nguyen was born in Vietnam and as a child became a refugee to America following the Vietnam War. Nguyen’s goal in his writing is to show an honest, nuanced portrayal of the Vietnam War from a perspective other than America’s. In 2015, he released his novel “The Sympathizer” and received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2016. In 2024, HBO released a critically acclaimed series based on “The Sympathizer” starring Robert Downey, Jr.
