A trash to treasure art competition is taking place as a part of OCC’s Social Justice Series.
This competition encourages students to recycle discarded items into works of art. Students are expected to find various pieces of trash to shape them into unique pieces of art. The purpose of this competition is to help work towards focusing on sustainability practices in local communities.
An award ceremony will be held on April 22 to award outstanding projects in the Grunin Center. First place prize is $1,500 followed by a second place prize of $750 and a third place of $250. All artwork will be displayed in the center’s art gallery. The college’s president, Dr. Monaco, will provide an address before submissions undergo judgment. Attendees are welcome to refreshments before a winner is announced.
This event is being held with the nonprofit Stroke Your Eco, an organization dedicated to removing litter from local waterways and surrounding areas. Lynn Brotherston founded Stroke Your Eco in 2021. Since then, the organization has recovered 35,000 pounds of trash from bodies of water in Ocean and Monmouth County.
