Ocean Pride and the Environmental Club at OCC are inviting students and faculty to contribute to the Spring Ahead Clothing Swap, an event that will promote sustainability and self-expression at the college on April 22 in honor of this year’s Earth Day.
The clubs will set up drop-boxes for clothing donations in high-traffic areas around campus. Students are encouraged to bring in any items they’d like to rehome, provided the clothes are in good shape and were washed beforehand. The clothing swap will take place in Room 109 in Building #10 from 1 to 5 p.m., and additional donations will be accepted during that time frame. The organizers are also looking for volunteers to sort the clothing onto racks and to set up, run, and take down the event.
Theo Ponticello, one of the coordinators in the Student Life office and the advisor for the Ocean Pride club, was very passionate about the details of this event and worked tirelessly to plan and organize it.
“All of the clothes are free, which is a big barrier when it comes to shopping for clothes,” Ponticello said. “This will give students the opportunity to connect with people in their community, while also saving the planet via sustainability for Earth Day.” When asked, the Ocean Pride officers seemed equally excited about this project. Their goal is to give LGBTQ+ people the opportunity to find clothes that fit their identities in an earth-friendly way in an accessible location.
