Ocean County College is running a trip to Switzerland as a study-abroad experience for humanities and hospitality students in the summer of 2024.
Students will have the opportunity to go on a 9-day trip across Switzerland and visit Zürich, Bern, Lausanne, Montreux, and Geneva. The trip package includes accommodations, transportation, and breakfast and dinner meals to create the best experience for students to fully capture and embrace Switzerland’s vibrant culture while also learning more about the country’s history and tourism industry.
The study abroad experience will focus on humanities, hospitality, and tourism within the country. English Professor, Kristyn Stout, and Professor of Business Studies, Sean Bips, will accompany and lead students taking travel seminar courses for Studies in the Humanities, HUMN 252, and in International Tourism Management, HRTM 240.
“Our Summer 2024 trip to Switzerland is unique because Professor Bips and I uniquely combine elements from both the humanities as well as hospitality and tourism to ensure our students make the most of their study abroad experience. We’re focusing on giving attendees invaluable opportunities to gain insight into the daily operations of hotels across Switzerland through back- and front-of-the-house tours, as well as visit EHL. To complement these experiences, will expose students to Switzerland’s extraordinarily diverse culture, as we tour various museums, explore the local art scene, practice our skills in speaking German and French, and explore how the beautiful landscape has inspired some of the greatest texts the Western world has produced. Regardless of whether students choose to take one or both classes, they’ll have the opportunity to participate in all of the activities for both of our courses to learn how a career in the hospitality industry in Switzerland intersects with its rich and diverse culture.” Professor, Kristyn Stout said when discussing the unique opportunity.
During the trip, all students will gain insight into hotel operations and visit one of the best hospitality schools in the world, the VHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland. Students will also be exposed to Switzerland’s history and culture through their tours of different museums, analyzing literature, while also having the opportunity to practice their German and French.
Registration and expenses will be discussed during the Study Abroad Switzerland info sessions taking place on Nov 21. and Dec 13. From 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Larson Student Center in building #8. During the info session, interested students will learn more information about this study abroad experience.
