OCC’s Community Ambassadors Club has partnered with Ocean County’s Community Compass to establish a 10-week ESL program.
The 10-week course aims to introduce and teach English to local non-native speakers to assist in integrating into a new culture. While the adult students focus on improving their conversation skills and writing techniques, they have the peace of mind of knowing their children are cared for by childcare assistants. Several OCC students have volunteered in the child care program, helping supervise and mentor kids while taking responsibility for their wellbeing. A total of 115 people are currently enrolled with 45 spots still open for last-minute sign-ups.
Classes began on Saturday, Oct. 7, and will be held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for the next 10 weeks at the Church of Grace and Peace in Toms River. The Community Compass will work with late registration to open more opportunities to help change the lives of more non-native speakers. Registration is $100 with books included. Registration continues past the start date.
Ocean County College formally partnered with Community Compass during the 2022 fall semester establishing a similar ESL program that lasted 15 weeks. The program had qualified teachers, more students, and a childcare program.
The Community Ambassadors Club was formed through its strong connections to the Community Compass, giving youth an opportunity to serve in the local community. These acts of volunteerism and advocacy help OCC students become leaders and voices for their community.
“It’s encouraging to see the passion with which Community Ambassadors Club members organized to promote the ESL program. The Community Ambassadors Club at OCC is a core partner in the social development of underrepresented communities. Together, we are spreading the message to the community that their language learning goals matter and we can help,” Mary Guarin, the ESL program coordinator said. The Community Ambassadors Club plans to work with Community Compass to bridge the opportunity for students wanting to get involved with the community and grow leadership skills.
